Interim Executive Case Files: Interim Operations Executive at a Family-Owned Food Manufacturer

Interim Executive brings change to a food manufacturer company

Interim executives are brought into a company when there’a sudden gap in leadership. This article examines the impact an interim executive had on a family-owned food manufacturer when brought in as an interim Operations Executive for 2 days a month for 6 months to help address some of their challenges.

Company background

Prior to the interim executive joining the company, there were a number of challenges facing the company. It had grown rapidly. They were having R&D issues, and there was little or no accountability, or autonomy within the company.

Implementation by interim executive

To help address these concerns the interim executive streamlined, documented and improved the R&D process; created new KPIs and a dashboard based on current business drivers; created roles & responsibilities, and implemented them along with a system to keep them updated; created a process for team to take responsibility for updating and on-going process documentation and cross-training; drove internal development; and realigned some positions and people to best suit their strengths.

Results achieved by the interim executive

Through all of this work, the interim executive was able to help the company achieve some impactful results. Their accounting books were closed by 5th of the following month and all reporting was ready by the 10th in order for the CEO to make accurate and timely decisions. Created autonomy and leadership throughout the company, and increased productivity with better decision making within the R&D process. The client commented, “We are leaps and bounds from where we were and are more confident in our roles. I can’t believe this is the same company!”
