This article examines the impact of a strategic plan created by interim executive for  $17 million medical device manufacturer. This business brought in an Interim Chief Strategy Officer who was then able to transition into the Quality Assurance Manager, only 2-3 days a week over a total of 8 months to help address many of their challenges.

Company background

The father had recently passed away leaving the son to run the company. Board of Directors wanted a strategic plan, and there was a great need to upgrade their existing management. The Quality Assurance Manager was released from the company with an ISO audit only 3 months away. There was a lack of decision-making tools in the company.

Implementation of strategic plan

To help address these concerns the interim executive put in place management changes based on interim recommendations and support. They created a 3-5 year strategic plan, a succession plan for son and new CEO. They identified the need for a professional national sales manager, and the interim took over the QA management role as they hired and trained a replacement.

Results achieved by interim management

Through all this work the interim executive was able to help the company achieve some impactful and meaningful results. The ISO audit went from five to zero quality issues. The new management was performing as a team, and the strategic plan was on track at the end of 1st year with quality goals in place and measured. Accountability was also in place with measurements.
