Before, we would buy space on newspapers or billboards to get your company’s name out there, today it’s all about being at the top of a search result. Today we will be talking about what is SEO, and how it works.

What is SEO

As mentioned previously, SEO is a way to get your website at the top of a search result. Basically, all of our search engines use algorithms to show people who are searching for things, relevant content to that thing they searched up. So when someone looks up “love seats for living room”, actual love seats show up, not love happening on a seat. The hope is, by optimizing your website and its relevant pages correctly, you will be able to rank at the top of search results, so many people can see your content.

How Does it Work

You may be assuming that to rank at the top of search results, your website needs to be loaded with a relevant keyword, and that is sort’ve true. Yes you do need a relevant keyword throughout your web page, but that is not what solely determines your ranking, instead your page is ranked by how often your website is being cited by other sites. So when other sites backlink your site, or cite your website, search engines like Google deem your website to be more relevant then others when it is cited a lot. It truly is a balance between keywords and number of citations, that determines your websites ranking on a search result.

How Can I Rank Higher

We won’t go into too much detail here, but essentially you need to have relevant keywords throughout your webpage, adding alt-tags to images, and organizing your pages with different headings. Generating backlinks is a bit more difficult. Typically this is done by things like blogging and social media. For example, at the bottom of this page, you will see a message saying “for more information on interim executives, click here.” We have created a backlink to our home page through this blog post by linking our website in this blog.

That is it. This is the basics on SEO and how it works. It really isn’t very difficult to understand, but mastering it is a whole different story. Once you master SEO, then you will be able to consistently rank higher then your competitors on search results, which will help you get your company’s name spread throughout the world.
